I find the idea of beauty emerging from mathematics fascinating, and my personal artwork has always focused on fractals and other generative and algorithmic systems. I have experimented with L-systems, fluid simulations, and node-based shader manipulation, but for me, trigonometry is what ties it all together. As often as possible I try to bring my love of 3D art into my professional work.

My very first job in the industry was Desktop Support/Staff Artist at the Help Desk of SGI where, in addition to my IT duties, I created weekly splash art for our internal website. In my down-time I used IRIS-GL, (a precursor to OpenGL) to make real-time graphics for raves in San Francisco. This was the inspiration for my subsequent VR project Whirledelic.

I adapted some of these performance pieces to create a set of 6 screen-savers for the SGI workstations called HayeSavers. I contributed them to the SGI Hot-Mix team, who distributed them to our customers as a reward for registering for the developer program. It was this, along with my keen interest in VR, that propelled me into my position as a World Builder in the Cosmo division of SGI. There I created many pieces for clients such as a world of umbrellas inspired by Magritte and an interactive plumbing system for This Old House.

At Samsung I created an animated 3D motion study in Cinema4D for a browsing interface for movies and TV shows called Cards. While only a concept, this project opened up new ways of thinking in our team and led to some great follow-on projects in other parts of the organization.

While creating iWithin, a voice-interactive guided meditation app, user testing revealed that our expensive custom Guru character was too “creepy”. I was tasked with creating an abstract interactive character to replace him. We narrowed down my initial 4 concepts to Jack, a 12-lobed abstract character with animation channels to match all of our back-end emotional states. Another of those character concepts lived on as Blue Genie who was used in later demos for Media Tuners.

Some examples of my more recent artwork are on my ArtStation page.
